.Astronomy 1

Cardiff, UK

22–24 September 2008 Cardiff University Department of Physics and Astronomy

The first .Astronomy conference was held at Cardiff University in September 2008. Organised by Robert Simpson, then a Cardiff PhD student, with support from Prof. Derek Ward-Thompson. The original subtitle was "Networked Astronomy and the New Media". It brought together approximately 30 astronomers, educators, and technologists to explore how the web and new media could transform astronomical research and outreach. Many attendees were converted to Twitter during the event. Formal proceedings were published by Canopus Publishing, the only .Astronomy to use this format.
